Destiny to Imagination: Prateep Kochabua documents the works and inspirations of one of Thailand’s premier artists, the tiger of Thai art, Prateep Kochabua. This fully illustrated book delves relentlessly into Prateep’s fantastical artworks, into a universe populated by contorted supernatural creatures and luscious nude goddesses—evocative figures borne of Prateep’s emphatic imagination and artistic intuition—that are strangely inspired by the most mundane material and everyday occurrences. Covering Prateep’s entire career beginning with his graduation from Silpakorn University up to the present, Andrew J. West’s text peels back the layers of mystery shrouding the canvases of the Thai surrealist —or simply “Thai Sur”—artist, revealing for readers and art-lovers the inspiration for many of the artist’s most significant artworks. Exploring this book is comparable to a voyage in a vessel in a painting by Prateep, travelling with him along the artist’s journey. By taking this journey, the reader will explore more than just the artist’s psyche, as Prateep’s art contains more than mere metaphors related only to his own life. The metaphors are shown in Thai Surrealist Life II : Prateep Kochabua to serve a dual function, since they are also allegoric of humanity’s journey through life toward death, and reveal something of the extraordinariness inherent in the commonplace.

Additional Information

Prateep Kochabua

Prateep Kochabua is an extraordinary artist who is blessed with the ability to portray visions from the imagination and who is able to distort the boundaries between animal and human form, plus the real and other worlds, so that cultural superstitions and spiritual values blend harmoniously into the composition of his truly amazing canvases. He captures effortlessly the sensuous poses of voluptuous females entwined within a surreal backdrop of the natural and supernatural worlds, worlds in which he secretes his masterful self-portrait in contemplative observation. Despite his undeniable talent for original creativity, he is also able to create almost  photographically an endearingly compelling rendition of rural community life across all generations as they share jovial times in relaxation from a waterside sala.

Making Prateep’s accomplishments all the more extraordinary is that although he was born a Bangkokian in 1948 he has acquired an affinity to, and an ability to reveal, the basic earthiness of nature in lucidly accurate detail. In fact, one might say he is gifted with an eloquence within his brushstrokes that brings his work on a par with classical masters. His works are illuminated with sensitivity and cleverly accentuated moods, both light and dark, within the same composition. Driven by an inner passion and original creative force, no two works are similar and each is a unique statement from the artist’s heartand imagination. Although all of his works are justifiably accredited highly, it is his series of seven paintings entitled Travelling to the Next Life, begun in 2006 and completed in 2011, that cement his reputation as a master of the surreal and fantasy, positioning him as a contemporary artist of great importance.
