Immersed in the Moon
Somphong’s perception of the world as projected in this painting at once led on to a somber set of images in which all-enveloping miasmic, poisonous pollution—as incomparably described in the revelatory Thai portmanteau term, paa-wá mon-lá-pít for pollution—even blots out moonlight itself and it even becomes no longer perceivable. These very images became the metaphorical germ of Somphong’s profoundly pessimistic evocation of a humanity run amok in its heedless destruction of the realm of nature and its ruthless quest for power and gain without surcease.
